Can I place a hold on a book?

Yes, borrowers with an active Truxal Library card can place hold requests on books from the library's collection.

All patrons can request books and CDs using our chat service or calling the circulation desk 410-777-2238; please have your library card or student ID number ready. Current students, staff, and faculty may also email the circulation department (circdesk@aacc.edu from your AACC address) or place holds directly in the online catalog – see instructions below. Faculty and staff may also request DVDs.

Allow at least 1 business day for your request to be processed. (If you need items faster, please visit the library.) You will be notified at your AACC email when your items are ready for checkout at the circulation desk. If you do not have a college email, staff will call the phone number on your library record. Your item/s will be held for you for 10 days.

If an item you requested is checked out, you will only be contacted when it is returned. You have the option to set a time limit when you make your request.

To request an item from another library, use our interlibrary loan service.

Placing hold requests online:

  1. Search the online catalog for an item you want to borrow – remember, reference staff can help you!
  2. When you've found an item you wish to borrow, select "Place Hold":
Search result for a book with title and bibliographic information and action buttons including Place Hold.
    • Electronic resources like e-books and streaming videos do not have a hold option – you can access them online immediately with your MyAACC credentials or library card number. If you find an e-book but prefer print, search the catalog for that title to see if we have it in another format. (If we don't, you may request the print book via interlibrary loan.)
  3. If you're not logged in, you'll be promoted to do so. Enter your library barcode number (no spaces) and password (if you've never changed your password, use the listed default, changeme):
Login form in catalog with Forgot My Password link.
  4. Press the "Place Hold(s)" button to confirm your request:
Dialog window listing title of book with Place Hold(s) button.
    • If your hold was placed successfully, you'll receive a confirmation message:
Window now displays message Hold Successfully Placed.
    • If your hold was unsuccessful, you'll receive a message indicating the reason, such as overdue materials on your account. If you're not sure why your request was blocked, call 410-777-2238 or contact circdesk@aacc.edu from your college email to inquire.
