Why do I have to renew my laptop each semester?
Last updated: Jul 03, 2024     Views: 30

Students who borrow laptops are required to complete a short renewal request form if they wish to keep a laptop for a subsequent semester. This is for a few reasons, including:

  1. Laptops are college property, so the renewal process serves as a reminder that borrowers are responsible for keeping the device safe and complying with certain usage policies.
  2. If policies must be revised, the renewal form is used to inform the borrower of the change, allowing them to return the device if they do not agree to the new terms.
  3. Due to limited supply, only students currently taking classes are eligible to borrow laptops. Students must confirm their enrollment in order to renew. (A significant number of laptops may be in circulation at any time, so it is not efficient for staff to manually check the enrollment status of each current laptop borrower, only a small percentage of whom may be eligible to renew.)

How to request renewal

Look for an email from the Circulation Desk 10 to 14 days before your due date. Your due date reminder will include a link to a renewal request form. This form is much shorter than the borrowing contract and typically takes just a few minutes to complete.

What if I'm not enrolled but plan to take classes later?

Return the laptop by your due date. When you're registered for more classes, just contact the Circulation Desk again to start a new loan. Please note keeping devices past due will jeopardize your ability to borrow again. Since the laptop program expanded in 2020, we have not yet run out of student devices, so there is no reason to "hold on" to a laptop.
